Discover Amazon

Amazon are a name known and respected across the world. Whether you’re shopping in the UK, the US or here in Australia, you know what you’re getting when you make a purchase through this tried and tested marketplace.
Formed by the now-famous Jeff Bezos, the company’s original name back in 1994 was Cadabra. It operated out of the bedroom of Bezos, changing its identity to Amazon after a spree of customers mistook the name for “cadaver”.
Solely selling books for the first six years of their existence, the organisation would first branch out in 2000, beginning to sell toys as well. Things are very different as we head into 2020. The company made over $200b in revenue in 2018 alone, with 647,500 employees working. From humble roots, strong acorns grow.
Reasons to Shop with Amazon
As if all that wasn’t enough reason to use this fantastic eCommerce platform, there are even more benefits to being an Amazon customer.
Some of the best include:
Amazon Prime Day. Unlike Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Prime Day lasts 36 hours and is exclusive to customers using the website. The amazing deals are available all over the world, with the most popular items this year being things like Nintendo Switches (Mexico), PlayStation Classic controllers (UK) and, bizarrely, dishwasher tablets (Australia).
Prime Video. The Prime Video service is one of the most popular assets Amazon has to offer. As well as a host of fantastic shows to rival the likes of Netflix, they’re also branching out into the sports world. Most recently they secured the rights to show Premier League football from the UK.
Returns Policy. You’re given as many as 90 days to return any unwanted products. Amazon will even subsidise the costs of shipping. Just make sure to include the item in its original packaging.
How to Save Money with Amazon
Amazon offers the best prices to their customers, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t other tricks to exploit. Here are some of the best.
Special promotions. All throughout the year, there are a number of unique days which Amazon customers can take advantage of to save some cash. We’ve already discussed the benefits of Prime Day, but there’s also the Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales, as well as special prices found in the “Today’s Deals” section.
Free shipping with Amazon. For those lucky enough to be Prime members, you’ll get free one-day shipping on anything you order. Not only is that a great way to save funds, but it’ll also bail you out of a tight spot if you’re buying gifts last minute.
Amazon Promo Codes
As if that wasn’t enough, there are special promo codes which help you save on every purchase. Some of the best deals currently available include:
- A minimum saving of 30% on all outlet products
- Free delivery on purchases over $39
- A free gift when you create an Amazon Baby Wishlist
These are just a handful of the amazing deals available. Check out what else Groupon has to offer.
A Journey Through the 'Amazon'
The chances are you’ve seen THAT picture of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, the only occupant of a very 90s-looking office, with wires everywhere, and an early days amazon.com logo plastered on the wall.
Fast forward 20 years, and it’s chalk and cheese. Amazon is now worth $134.5bn and Jeff has become the world’s richest person (albeit with a divorce settlement pending).
Amazon is the dominant player in the world of e-commerce, possessing an incredible 47% share of online retail sales in the US (according to eMarketer). E-commerce as a whole is quickly catching up with traditional, brick-and-mortar retail – Statista’s figures predict that global e-commerce sales will reach almost 5 trillion USD by 2021. If these numbers are accurate, we can only expect to see more incredible growth from Amazon in the future.
Beginning life as an online book retailer, Amazon has become so much more. You can now buy over 100 million items online, which is a pretty remarkable rise.
To celebrate Amazon’s monumental feat, we’ve compiled some of the amazing stats and facts you probably don’t know about the online giant. Take a look and see what’s new to you.
Amazing Amazon - What You Don't Know
- Amazon nearly launched as relentless.com (it still redirects), before Jeff chose the name we love today because websites were listed in alphabetical order.
- Amazon’s success started early. In its initial month in business, the online giant received orders from 50 US states and 45 countries around the world.
- However, it took seven years before the company started turning a profit – a small $5m reported in January 2002 for the previous quarter.
- Half of the items purchased on Amazon come from small and medium-sized businesses (or SMBs). These businesses have created more than 900,000 jobs across the world, and more than 20,000 of them have now surpassed $1 million in sales.
- Fortune ranks Amazon as the #3 most admired company in the world.
- And speaking of worldly feats, Amazon is also the 10th most popular website in the world – pretty good going.
- Ever heard of AmazonSmile? We hadn’t. Shop there and you’ll have the bonus of 0.5% of your purchase price being donated to charity.
- Amazon is revolutionary, using 45,000 robots in fulfilment centres around the world. Sounds like a Rise of the Machines scenario.
- And that’s not all. They’re planning a Blade Runner-esque future called Prime Air, with drones delivering packages within just 30 minutes of the order.
- Amazon has spread its wings far and wide, owning 41 subsidiaries and brands. This includes Zappos, IMDb, Whole Foods and Audible.
- Amazon love pets. Working here you’ll be surrounded by furry friends, and the Seattle campus is said to have 6,000 dogs on site.
- Time is money, so the old adage goes – and that’s certainly true when it comes to Amazon. The site once went offline for just 49 minutes… but cost the company a whopping $5.7m in sales.
- Amazon have listed what’s probably the most expensive book in the world – for a pricey $23m. It was all an algorithmic error though, with the price later corrected to $106.23.
- It feels as though Amazon has had a monopoly on the market for years, but in fact, its dominance has doubled in recent times. In 2012 Amazon accounted for just 25% of all online sales, compared to 47% nowadays.
- Amazon actually pays its employees to leave their role, in the aptly named “Pay to Quit” programme. They offer every new starter $2,000 to quit their role, increasing the offer $1,000 each year thereafter (to a max of $5,000). According to Bezos, this policy will “encourage folks to take a moment and think about what they really want.”
- Amazon might not be the global giant of today if it weren’t for a little help from Bezos’ parents. They used $300,000 of retirement savings to invest in Amazon.
