The Hotel: Breakfree Long Island Resort
Breakfree Long Island Resort offers a laid back resort setting from which to experience the wonders of the Whitsundays. Fringed with vibrant coral reefs and boasting kilometres of National Park walking tracks and plentiful flora and fauna, it is an ideal choice for nature lovers. There is also an array of fun onsite activities and water sports to fill the days, including a pool, tennis court and mini golf.
Groupies are welcomed to the resort with a refreshing mocktail before dropping bags off in their Beachfront Room and plonking themselves in one of the hammocks shaded by palm trees. A plethora of kids’ club activities keep little ones occupied, including treasure hunts and fish feeding, giving grown ups the chance to unwind by the pool bar. Guests can also maintain beauty regimes at the resort spa, or treat themselves to a massage for true relaxation.
The Area: The Whitsundays
The Whitsundays are a group of emerald green islands surrounded by clear waters and vibrant marine life. Long Island lies amongst the archipelago, just 30 minutes from Hamilton Island. Right in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef, most of the islands are covered in lush green vegetation that tumbles down to beaches famed for their pure white powder sand. The sweeping natural beauty is best viewed from the deck of a yacht with cocktail in hand, sails billowing overhead, and water gently breaking against the bow.
Long Island features shady palm trees for those who want to kick back and relax on the beach with a good book. Those with a little energy to burn can roam over 20 kilometres of bush walking in the Molle Islands National Park.

We came here because the price was affordable and did not expect too much - but we got all we could have wished for and more. The staff and the local wildlife were genuinely friendly and helpful, despite the odd hiss from the bush curlew. The facilities were great and all working and freely available. You could relax and do as little as you wanted just your outside beachfront unit or you could partake in the many arranged free activities or just stroll on the paths through the adjacent national park forest and absorb nature. When the tide is in the beach is great for swimming, kayaking and other watersports and when the tide was out the resort had two pools and a hot spa available. We had spring low tides and exploring among the brightly coloured exposed coral gardens that stretch across the bay was awesome. When we were there visibility in the water was not good for snorkelling but we still swam with some of the local turtles. Sea temperature was 22 deg C and just warm enough in July for comfortable swimming for people like us from cooler places like NZ.

If you want to relax this is the place for you. There's not much transfers from cruise Whitsundays so organise your time wisely if you plan to go out from long island. On my birthday my fiance organise a surprise candlelit dinner by the beach, everything was lovely, thanks to Sarah, Scott, Luke and all the staff, they are all so welcoming. We tried the pub food which is decent and the restaurant food, a bit pricey however it is island so you get island price food. The cocktails and mocktails were good too and decent price. We enjoyed using the spa as the pool and beach is a bit cold for our liking. During night time they had different activities to entertain everybody such as karaoke, bingo, singer and trivia night. The rooms are quite spacious and the bathrooms are modern. We had the beach view room which is fantastic.
