The Area: Margaret River

The town of Margaret River is located in the valley of the eponymous Margaret River, just a three-hour drive from Perth. Known for its wine production and tourism, the Margaret River region attracts an estimated 500,000 visitors each year. With a variety of boutique-size wine producers calling Margaret River home, the region draws aficionados from all over the globe, and though it produces just 3% of total Aussie grape production, it commands an impressive 20% of the Australian premium wine market.

The area also draws adventurers to its extensive cave system located within the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park. The most famous of these is the Mammoth Cave - a multi-chambered system lying 23km south of the town and containing fossils dated back over 35,000 years. The cave has been open to the public since 1904 and can be explored via a self-guided tour. It is one of the few caves in Australia which offers partial disabled access.

You’ll also find a range of impressive collection of surf breaks in the region, with 75 along 130km of coastline from the eastern side of Cape Naturaliste down to the south of Cape Hamelin. Whether you’re looking to dip your toe in the water, or are an old hand in the surf, you’re sure to find the right location.
