The Area: Barossa Valley, SA
Just an hour from Adelaide, the Barossa Valley is the ultimate country escape complete with rolling hills, dappled sunlight and twisty tree-lined roads. Even more appealing than the scenery are the wineries, with over 750 grape growing families producing the area’s signature full-bodied reds and characterful whites. The Barossa’s rich heritage harks back to the early German settlers of the 1840s, and towns such as Tanunda are littered with historic buildings and modern gourmet restaurants in an almost equal measure.
The Barossa Valley is well known for its food and wine attractions and experiences. Some of the highlights include Maggie Beer’s Farm Shop, on the outskirts of Nuriootpa, which offers tastings, sales and limited edition seasonal produce. Customers can browse locally produced regional goods, purchase one of Maggie’s signed books, have a light lunch or simply sit back and take in the view. Visitors also shouldn’t miss The Barossa Farmer’s Market. The market has become a Saturday morning institution. Open from 7.30am to 11.30am, foodies can taste and buy the best the Barossa has to offer. More than 50 stallholders provide meats, bread, cheese, fresh fruit and vegetables, oils, preserves and local specialities. Stock up for the weekend or get everything you need for the week ahead.
